Dr. Jeffrey P. Kanter

For 35 years, I have come to work each day knowing that I am making positive and lasting changes with my patients. Whether they are experiencing periodontitis (gum disease), missing teeth, or any other conditions, I have enjoyed the challenge and reward of helping people. It has been so gratifying watching my patients make the changes needed to lead better, healthier lives through their improved oral health. I grew up thinking about dentistry, as my grandfather began practicing dentistry in 1925, my father started practicing in 1955, and I have been a dentist since 1985. My grandmother was the office manager in my grandfather’s practice, my mother managed my father’s practice, and my sister was the dental hygienist in our family practice until she went to medical school. Through providing excellent treatment, information, and understanding, I have committed my life’s work to helping people be healthier and feel better.

However extensive my formal education has been, I understand how important it is for my patients that I stay as up-to-date and educated within the rapidly developing dental field as possible. My patients deserve nothing but the most effective and efficient treatments available, and this is why I stay closely attached to the academic community as well as continue various educational courses. I am an affiliate faculty member (clinical assistant professor) in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Washington Dental School. I also am a visiting lecturer at the LWTC dental hygiene training program.

IN THE COMMUNITY

For nearly 26 years, I have had the pleasure of being a part of our beautiful little place in the Pacific Northwest. I have met so many unique and interesting people through my profession, and I have never ceased to be amazed at how much this community has given me. One way that I say thank you, and because I believe strongly in giving back to my community, is by staying active in community outreach programs and other organizations that help out the people who make up our home. Following is a list of organizations and programs that I am a part of that allow me to give back to my amazing friends and neighbors who make up my community:

  • Teen Feed — Inter-denominational program to prepare and serve meals to homeless Seattle teens in the University District
  • International (Mexico) dental charity missions
  • Dental Team Leader — MEET International, interdisciplinary medical and dental professionals dedicated to improving the standards of medical and dental care in Vietnam
  • DDS (Donated Dental Services) — Local dental charity that provides free dental care through the WSDA
  • Private efforts to treat tent city residents organized by local dentists.

AT HOME

I am a native of Cleveland, Ohio, but I have called the Pacific Northwest home for the last 26 years. My wife and I, along with our two daughters, have truly enjoyed the beautiful landscape and wonderful people this place provides. When I’m not in the office serving my patients, I enjoy African folk drumming, creating jewelry, sculpture, and knives (I was an art major before entering dentistry), cooking, reading, competitive marksmanship, dancing, skiing, and kayaking. Some fun facts about me are: I spent two years as a migrant farm laborer in Washington, I was a professional musician in Cleveland, and I was a construction laborer and salmon canner in Alaska. All before I became a dentist!
